Direct Mail Online Response Channels

To leverage the web as a response channel for marketing campaigns, the online response component must be distinct and singular in purpose – convert visitors into responders.

Through the use of Online Response Channels, Digital Underware offers marketers a turnkey, economical, response collection website for off-line campaigns. Specifically, an Online Response Channel is designed to serve three fundamental yet critical purposes:

  1. Elicit the submission of a response from site visitors.
  2. Function as a database marketing tool by accumulating data from the campaign reply device as well as on the visitor’s interaction with the site itself.
  3. Integrate seamlessly into the campaign development work-flow.

View our example response channel of a survey distributed by a tour guide agency. The survey is designed to collect information about what people thought about taking a tour of Richmond and to assess the effectiveness of the tour guides. A direct mail post card would be sent with a unique invitation code or an email message could be sent with a customized link to the survey. When a visitor logs in with their invitation code, or clicks on the customized link to the survey, the form is pre-populated with all of the visitor's contact information so all they need to do is answer the survey questions. There is no need to waste their time having them enter information you already know about them. You can also offer an incentive for visitors to complete the survey such as a coupon to a store or a chance to win a prize.

The online response chanel also includes a reporting system to view and analyze the collected survey data. As visitor's complete the survey, custom, real-time, bar graph reports are generated. If the marketing campaign includes some off-line response channels such as mail or phone, there is an online data entry form so all the data will be centralized for reporting and analysis.

In addition to the standard data collection and analysis reports, an enhanced tracking system may be added to the response channel. One of the problems with traditional direct marketing is the limited amount of data gathered to assess the effectiveness of a particular marketing campaign. In an effective direct mail marketing campaign about 2% - 3% of those who receive the mail respond. By implementing a custom tracking system it is possible to watch the interaction of each individual visitor with your website even if they don't fully complete the call to action. The ability to analyze the behavior of visitors, such as their path through the site and how long they viewed particular pages on the site reveals the effective and ineffective aspects of the site which will help optimize marketing efforts for future campaigns. Using our proprietary tracking software, you are able to link an individual's behavior on your website with other known information about that individual such as any information from the mail file or any newly submitted data from the web site. Combining this information means that you are now able to track the behavior of each individual visitor on your website, link that behavior to their contact information, then use the information obtained from analyzing their interaction with your web site to remarket to that individual.

Consider the example of a bank marketing a credit card with a low interest rate and a monthly fee. Suppose Jon Smith received the direct mail and went to the website to read about the offer. We can track that Jon Smith logged onto the site, read the information about the low interest rate, then read the information about the monthly payment, then left the site. We could deduce that Jon left because he didn't like the idea of a monthly payment. Now that you know a little more about Jon, you will have more success winning him as a client when you offer him a credit card with no monthly payment but with a slightly higher interest rate.
